National History Day is an educational program. Students conduct yearlong research on a topic related to a selected theme. The research process is grueling and intense. Students who opt to enrich their studies with NHD take on college-level research by uncovering and analyzing primary and secondary sources. They visit museums, libraries, archives, and interview experts in the field. Any student who tackles this task is a winner by building a skill set as a researcher. Some are lucky enough to advance and have more people interview them about the process and their findings, but all NHD students should be proud that they are becoming more information literate researchers through the process.

Our student Akila is a member of the NJ delegation at the National Competition in Maryland this week. For two years she has focused her research on one of her passions - pure foods. In addition to planning CMS Fresh for Food Day, she has spent two years researching the laws and regulations of food in America. She has designed fantastic websites to teach others about the pure foods movement and was given the opportunity to defend her research at Nationals. The PRISM room cannot be more proud of Akila and all of her persistence. She truly exemplifies the passion of a world-class researcher who keeps pushing herself to learn more, reflect more, and do more. The award Akila wears humbly for all to see is her ability to teach others about Dr. Wiley and the pure foods movement. Congratulations Akila for embracing the struggle!

Please see the email regarding homework from our Superintendent, Dr. Aderhold:

During this school year, we held four No Homework Nights.  The purpose of No Homework Nights was to give students time off from preparing homework and projects and studying for tests, as well as offering students an opportunity to explore topics that they are passionate about, spend time with family, enjoy outside activities, attend WW-P concerts, plays, and athletic events.

As a follow up, I requested a subcommittee of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council to study the topic of homework. As part of its review, the subcommittee conducted surveys and the results showed that over 80 percent of K-12 students and parents supported the No Homework Nights, over 80 percent of K-8 teachers supported these nights, and 45 percent of high school teachers supported No Homework Nights. [In the survey, high school teachers expressed concerns over the implications of these No Homework Nights given the rotating high school day schedule.]

During the 2015-2016 school year, the subcommittee, known as the Homework Committee, will continue its work. The subcommittee will draft district policies and procedures, which they will submit to me for review.

After an evaluation of the survey data, WW-P will be increasing its No Homework Nights. For planning purposes, this means that students would not have homework on these nights, and no assignments, homework, reports, long-term projects, or tests scheduled for the following day. Also, long-term projects would not be due until the Thursday of the week students return from Thanksgiving Break, Winter Recess, and Spring Recess.
There is tremendous value in engaging in meaningful homework assignments that reinforce concepts and skills taught during the school day. At the same time, there are times when we need to collectively have a break from the responsibilities of homework and enjoy time with family and friends.
You can read the full listing of all No Homework Nights below. Please mark your calendar for these dates!
Sincerely,
David Aderhold, Superintendent of Schools
