During this school year, we held four No
Homework Nights. The purpose of No Homework Nights
was to give students time off from preparing homework and projects and studying
for tests, as well as offering students an opportunity to explore topics that
they are passionate about, spend time with family, enjoy outside activities,
attend WW-P concerts, plays, and athletic events.
As a follow up, I requested a
subcommittee of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council to study the topic of
homework. As part of its review, the subcommittee conducted surveys and the
results showed that over 80 percent of K-12 students and parents supported the No
Homework Nights, over 80 percent of K-8 teachers supported these
nights, and 45 percent of high school teachers supported No Homework
Nights. [In the survey, high school teachers expressed concerns over
the implications of these No Homework Nights given the rotating high school day
schedule.]
During the 2015-2016 school
year, the subcommittee, known as the Homework Committee, will continue its
work. The subcommittee will draft district policies and procedures, which they
will submit to me for review.
After an evaluation of the survey data, WW-P will be increasing its No Homework Nights. For planning purposes, this means that students would not have homework on these nights, and no assignments, homework, reports, long-term projects, or tests scheduled for the following day. Also, long-term projects would not be due until the Thursday of the week students return from Thanksgiving Break, Winter Recess, and Spring Recess.
There is tremendous value in engaging in meaningful
homework assignments that reinforce concepts and skills taught during the
school day. At the same time, there are times when we need to collectively have
a break from the responsibilities of homework and enjoy time with family and
friends.

Based upon the rotational schedule, the following
dates provide for No Homework for the last rotation of both the AM and PM

for a continuity of no homework nights across the rotational schedule.
